Recent catch quotas have included 62 Baird's beaked whales (54 in the Pacific and 8 in the Sea of Japan); 50 southern-form pilot whales; 50 northern-form pilot whales; and 20 Risso's dolphins. Before the moratorium, the minke quota was over 300 whales, so it is quite clear that loss of the minke quota is having a tremendous negative impact on the small-type coastal whalers and their communities.
